Many people recognize themselves in ADHD symptoms—restlessness, inattention, impulsivity, outbursts, daydreaming, or feeling disconnected from the “real” world.

But ADHD isn’t a disease with a single cause (like the flu) or a simple answer. It’s a collection of experiences and symptoms that can look different for each person—and often change over time.

Sometimes, what feels like “just how I am” or “just how my brain works” is really a way (often unconscious) of coping with stress, avoiding uncomfortable feelings, or dealing with overwhelm.

Restlessness, distraction, or impulsivity may have once protected you—even if now they sometimes create problems.

💡 It’s not just about attention:
• Difficulty concentrating isn’t just a “technical” problem—it can be a way of avoiding inner emptiness, anxiety, anger, or sadness.
• Relationships—especially early ones—shape how these patterns show up. Seeking approval, struggling with boundaries, or feeling “never enough” can all play a role.
• Sometimes, the body “speaks” too: restlessness, tension, or the urge to keep moving can be ways of expressing discomfort or unmet needs.

ADHD isn’t a virus you “catch.” It’s also not a fixed condition or a life sentence.
These symptoms often overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, or past difficulties—and can shift depending on your environment, from school to work, from quiet moments to busy days.

So, don’t just focus on the label.

Psychoanalysis offers a space to explore what these experiences truly mean and do for you—beyond the label. It’s about understanding yourself more deeply and giving voice to what’s unspoken.

A signifier is a word whose meaning depends on context.

Like "fair": could be a fair trial, a fair price, a county fair, or fair skin.

And what is "fair" anyway? We can't assume any specific meaning.

See, rigid meanings and fixed interpretations cause suffering.

In psychoanalysis, we try to loosen the grip of rigid interpretations. This creates space for new meanings to emerge, facilitating healing.

Symptoms have changed. The clinic has shifted. In

In the PAST, symptoms primarily originated from inhibition and repression (think of obsessive neurosis). But TODAY, we grapple with conditions like ADHD, narcissism, and eating disorders— often linked to EXCESS: of energy, consumerism, stimuli, and a LACK OF LIMITS in our digitally driven society. Is this a new era of clinical practice?

Stop searching for your "true" self. It's a myth.

Authenticity isn't about consistency, it's about freedom.

The truth about being human? We're not carved from a single block of granite. We're made of many parts – thoughts, beliefs, desires, fears – pulling us in different directions. 🎭

We are made of words, and words are ambiguous by nature; contradiction is inevitable. We are a collection of contradictions, constantly evolving.

Those who suffer from imposter syndrome struggle to accept this contradiction, thinking that one thing negates the other. They are in constant search of the "true" Self. They are filled with self-doubt.

On the other hand, the "real" imposter probably also has feelings of inadequacy, but resolves them by embracing a single image of themselves, even if it's not entirely "true": the important thing is that others believe it. Their "truth" is a construction, a projection of desires.

The challenge? To accept all our facets, our contradictions, our changes. Being authentic doesn't mean being perfectly consistent or coherent, but embracing our complexity. 💫

In our increasingly mental-health-conscious society, the term "narcissist" is often thrown around as an insult. It's become synonymous with "bad person," "egotist," or "manipulator." This simplification is not only inaccurate but also harmful. It prevents individuals struggling with narcissistic traits from seeking help.

The truth is, narcissism is complex, with varying degrees of severity. Reducing it to a simple insult ignores the underlying vulnerabilities and pain that often drive these behaviors. This judgment, ironically, reinforces the very negative assumptions that many narcissists hold about themselves and the world.

Why This Matters:

The casual misuse of "narcissist" is especially appalling in a time when we're striving for greater mental health awareness and destigmatization. Here's how it hurts:

Blocks Help-Seeking: When "narcissist" is an insult, people are less likely to recognize and address these traits in themselves. The fear of judgment outweighs the potential benefits of therapy.

Misses the Nuances: It ignores the nuances of narcissistic traits and the different ways they can manifest. It overlooks the underlying vulnerabilities and pain that contribute to these behaviors. This lack of understanding breeds judgment.

Reinforces Negative Beliefs: The stigma associated with narcissism can confirm a narcissist's own negative self-image, leading to further isolation and hindering personal growth.

Moving Toward Understanding:

We need to move beyond simplistic and inaccurate portrayals of narcissism. Recognizing the complexity of this personality type, the underlying vulnerabilities, and the impact of stigma is crucial for creating an environment where individuals can seek help without shame.

Instead of using "narcissist" as a weapon, let's strive to understand the underlying dynamics. What is narcissism? What are its potential causes? When does it cause suffering? And how can that suffering be addressed?

It's time to think in plural: not depression, but depressionS.

The DSM-5 lists at least 10 types of depressive disorders. But the truth is: there are as many depressions as there are people experiencing them.

Common symptoms include:

• Persistent sadness and apathy

• Loss of interest

• Sleep disturbances

• Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, hopelessness

• Feeling stuck and lack of future perspectives

But when we truly listen to someone's story, we discover that their depression is as unique as their fingerprint. It's shaped by their personal way of seeing the world and the meanings they attribute to events.

This is why your story matters. It's not just about checking symptoms off a list. It's about understanding the intricate tapestry of your life that led you here. The roots of depression often lie in (but not limited to):

• Childhood experiences: rigid upbringing, lack of attention, significant losses

• Adult life events: new losses, life changes, chronic stress

• Psychological factors: how you make sense of the world, unprocessed traumas

• Personality structure: e.g., neurotic Vs psychotic

• Social factors: isolation, cultural pressures, prolonged stressful living conditions

• Disconnection from personal desires and authentic self

To understand YOUR depression, we must start with YOUR narrative, not a checklist of symptoms.

Just as your story is one-of-a-kind, so should be your path to healing.

• Feel understood, and understand yourself better

• Process past experiences and unresolved losses

The "highlight reel" effect creates a distorted view of reality, fueling FOMO and amplifying feelings of inadequacy.

3 A SYMPTOM OF OUR TIMES - A Reflection of Current Social Discourse and Ideals

🧠 Impostor syndrome is part of a broader trend including anxiety, narcissism, ADHD, burnout and eating disorders - symptoms of an ego struggling with contradictory demands. It reflects the tension between societal expectations and personal authenticity. This contrasts with historical, repression-based symptoms and highlights our evolving societal discourse.

💡 Two paradoxes: a) this society tells you that you're free to be anything you want, but in reality there are many pressures to which the ego feels it cannot respond; b) in our self-absorbed, ego-centric society, we struggle to define our true selves.

🌱 Interestingly, when managed well, impostor syndrome can lead to greater self-awareness and humility, driving continuous self-improvement.

As a psychoanalyst in Hong Kong, I often hear people describe feeling like impostors. This phenomenon has become more common, yet difficult to discuss. Why? Imposter syndrome often comes with:

It's crucial to know you're not alone, and it's okay to talk about it.

Too often, we judge and react based on these visual elements.
For example, we often judge based on:

• How people act
• What they look like
• What we imagine/visualize about them

Many therapies as well aim to normalize these visible behaviors, without even interrogating it. 🤔

Psychoanalysis operates on another level. 🚀 It's about breaking down these visual elements into words 🗣️. They will reveal a wide range of (often unconscious):

💡 Assumptions
🌱 Beliefs
🔥 Desires

They will reveal a whole different story behind those images.

Why don't we just focus on behaviors? Because the same behavior or fantasy can have different meanings for different people. 🧩

Similar behaviors, BUT different stories: consider these (I know I know, very simplistic) examples

Always punctual ⏰:
• Person A: Coping with childhood experiences of unpredictability 🏠
• Person B: Expressing control over daily life uncertainties 🌪️
• Person C: Unconsciously seeking approval from authority figures 👔

Always cracking jokes 😄:
• Person A: Managing social anxiety through humor 😅
• Person B: Carrying on a family tradition of witty banter 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
• Person C: Using laughter to deflect from discussing personal issues 🛡️

It's words that give sense to the visible, constructing and even anticipating it: we often see what we expect to see. 👁️‍🗨️

Remember: there's always more to understand beneath the surface. 🌊

An analyst doesn't provide answers; they guide you in discovering your own truths. The real work begins when you start articulating your unique story.

This transition from passively expecting solutions to actively reflecting on yourself is crucial. It involves forming open-ended questions rather than demands, and being receptive to insights that may emerge in unexpected ways - through your unconscious, coincidences, or life events.

In analysis, there are no universal, conclusive answers. It's a deeply personal exploration where you become the author of your own understanding.

This shift marks the beginning of true analysis. It's when we start to consider that there might be more to our story than what's on the surface. We begin to entertain the idea that an unconscious part of ourselves plays a role in shaping our experiences, even if we can't immediately see or understand it.

This journey of self-discovery is about looking “inward” rather than just focusing on (or blaming) external circumstances or on people around us. It's about exploring how our thoughts, words, and actions might be contributing to the situations we find ourselves in.

By doing this, we open up new possibilities for change and growth. Instead of feeling like passive recipients of life's events, we become active participants in our own story. We start to see patterns, make connections, and understand our reactions in a deeper way.

1. Personal Analysis
• Unlike other counseling/psychotherapy orientations, having undergone one’s own analysis (yes, as patients) is a core requirement for becoming an analyst.
• Undergoing personal analysis is essential for analysts to understand unconscious processes firsthand.

2. Continuous Learning
• The formation of the analyst is a lifelong process.
• Formal education may lay the foundation, but informal learning through study/reading groups (cartels), conferences and involvement in analytical organizations are crucial.

3. Clinical Practice

The psychoanalyst's journey is an eternal dance with the unconscious, a perpetual unfolding of understanding.

Each patient is a new universe, each session a voyage into uncharted waters. But unlike those ancient seekers, analysts know their own minds are part of the process. Every interpretation offered is also a mirror held up to the self. A mirror reflecting our own understanding and biases.

In this sacred space between analyst and analysand, both are transformed. It's a continuous cycle of learning, unlearning, and relearning – where there's only one teacher: the unconscious.
