Saying "I am stressed" feels almost vintage—a relic of the 80s corporate world. Before that, it was often called a "nervous breakdown." Today, the vocabulary of suffering has shifted to "Burnout," "Trauma," or even self-diagnosed "ADHD."We keep updating the labels, searching for biological explanations for our discomfort.But terms like "Stress" often act as suitcase words: we throw everything inside them so we don't have to look at what is really happening. 🧳As a psychoanalyst, I find the word "stress" inadequate. First, it flattens complex human phenomena into something generic. Second, it implies the solution is simply to relax.But stress, per se, is neither good nor bad. It is energy. ⚡The problem isn't the pressure. The problem is the direction.
🔹 When pressure aligns with your desire, it mobilises you. It feels like enthusiasm, growth, creation.
🔹 When pressure opposes your desire—when "I must" crushes "I want"—it immobilises you. That is when it becomes a symptom.In my recent interview with the South China Morning Post SCMP, I argued that relying on these broad terms prevents us from seeing the specific, subjective conflict at play. 📰In my clinical practice, I see that symptoms often arise not because we are doing "too much," but because we are persisting in situations that have lost their subjective resonance.We try to fix it with mindfulness or medication, treating the symptom while ignoring the cause. But the body is often just the stage where an unconscious conflict is speaking. 🗣️Don't just try to "manage" the stress. How do you do research on psychoanalysis in a place where psychoanalysis is not known or practiced?Fun fact: 15 years ago I came to Hong Kong to research psychoanalysis… only to discover it didn't exist here. 💡Coming from Italy—where Freud and the unconscious are part of everyday culture—I was confused. That silence became a puzzle I couldn’t let go of. My research took a U‑turn: why is there no psychoanalysis here? And how do you study something that is absent?That obstacle forced me to rethink everything. It eventually became a book in 2017, and yesterday I published a new article revisiting that journey. 📖Hong Kong taught me that psychoanalysis cannot just be "exported." It must be a practice of listening that adapts to where it lands. I found that while the theory was missing here, a relational form of listening was alive.Working here continues to unsettle me in the best way. It keeps my practice honest:

👉 Privilege the patient's words over preconceived theory or techniques.

Are you just venting, or are you trying to change?💡 The moment therapy actually starts workingHave you ever felt stuck in a loop of frustration?
Maybe you feel treated unfairly at work, or misunderstood in your relationships.At the beginning of psychotherapy/psychoanalysis, it’s normal to vent. We list our grievances: the bad boss, the difficult partner, the injustices of life. These feelings are valid.
But venting alone doesn’t bring change.✨ The Turning PointReal transformation begins when we stop looking only at what others are doing to us and start looking inward.
It happens when we shift from Complaint to Curiosity.Instead of asking “Why is this happening to me?”, try asking:👉 “What do I have to do with what happens to me?”

• Symptom overlap: inattention, restlessness, and “task paralysis” also appear with anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, and poor sleep.Social media effects:
• Exposure effect: checklists, “POV: ADHD brain,” and memes spread because occasional distractibility is common.
• Availability bias: the more ADHD content is seen, the more it is noticed in oneself—even when difficulties are mild or situational.

Attention is shaped by history, emotions, relationships, sleep, and context—not only by “a fast brain.”Beyond the Label:
• ADHD symptoms are real, yet often the tip of the iceberg. Listening in depth reveals layers:-emotional (anxiety, anger, inner emptiness),
-relational (search for recognition, fear of abandonment, boundary issues),
-contextual (overstimulation, social expectations, environment).Stopping at the label risks losing these nuances.Bottom line:
• Diagnosis can be a helpful starting point, not the finish line. It’s a collection of experiences and symptoms that can look different for each person—and often change over time.Sometimes, what feels like “just how I am” or “just how my brain works” is really a way (often unconscious) of coping with stress, avoiding uncomfortable feelings, or dealing with overwhelm.Restlessness, distraction, or impulsivity may have once protected you—even if now they sometimes create problems.💡 It’s not just about attention:
• Difficulty concentrating isn’t just a “technical” problem—it can be a way of avoiding inner emptiness, anxiety, anger, or sadness.
• Relationships—especially early ones—shape how these patterns show up. Seeking approval, struggling with boundaries, or feeling “never enough” can all play a role.
• Sometimes, the body “speaks” too: restlessness, tension, or the urge to keep moving can be ways of expressing discomfort or unmet needs.ADHD isn’t a virus you “catch.” It’s also not a fixed condition or a life sentence.
These symptoms often overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, or past difficulties—and can shift depending on your environment, from school to work, from quiet moments to busy days.So, don’t just focus on the label.Psychoanalysis offers a space to explore what these experiences truly mean and do for you—beyond the label. We're made of many parts – thoughts, beliefs, desires, fears – pulling us in different directions. 🎭We are made of words, and words are ambiguous by nature; contradiction is inevitable. We are a collection of contradictions, constantly evolving.Those who suffer from imposter syndrome struggle to accept this contradiction, thinking that one thing negates the other. They are in constant search of the "true" Self. They are filled with self-doubt.On the other hand, the "real" imposter probably also has feelings of inadequacy, but resolves them by embracing a single image of themselves, even if it's not entirely "true": the important thing is that others believe it. Their "truth" is a construction, a projection of desires.The challenge? To accept all our facets, our contradictions, our changes. This phenomenon has become more common, yet difficult to discuss. Why? Imposter syndrome often comes with:• Shame: Feeling like you're doing something morally wrong
• Confusion: Uncertainty about your true self if you're not what you've portrayedIt's crucial to know you're not alone, and it's okay to talk about it.While "impostor syndrome" captures something of this experience, I find the label overly simplistic. It might even reinforce feelings of fraudulence.In this series, I'll explore these feelings through a psychoanalytic lens, going beyond the label. 💭 FantasiesToo often, we judge and react based on these visual elements.
For example, we often judge based on:• How people act
• What they look like
• What we imagine/visualize about themMany therapies as well aim to normalize these visible behaviors, without even interrogating it. 🤔Psychoanalysis operates on another level. 🚀 It's about breaking down these visual elements into words 🗣️. They will reveal a wide range of (often unconscious):💡 Assumptions
🌱 Beliefs
🔥 DesiresThey will reveal a whole different story behind those images.Why don't we just focus on behaviors? Because the same behavior or fantasy can have different meanings for different people. 🧩Similar behaviors, BUT different stories: consider these (I know I know, very simplistic) examplesAlways punctual ⏰:
• Person A: Coping with childhood experiences of unpredictability 🏠
• Person B: Expressing control over daily life uncertainties 🌪️
• Person C: Unconsciously seeking approval from authority figures 👔Always cracking jokes 😄:
• Person A: Managing social anxiety through humor 😅
• Person B: Carrying on a family tradition of witty banter 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
• Person C: Using laughter to deflect from discussing personal issues 🛡️It's words that give sense to the visible, constructing and even anticipating it: we often see what we expect to see. 👁️‍🗨️Remember: there's always more to understand beneath the surface. 🌊Challenge: Look at a behavior you often judge. Can you imagine 3 different reasons for it? Share your insights! 🧠💡
